Don't have firewall ? - Have one for free

Every day challenge for network administrator is security threat.  How to fight against threats? Yes, firewall is the best solution to handle the threat up to certain level. But, we have to think twice for the investment in this critical global financial crisis scenario. So why don’t you try the Open source Firewall? Let me explain how to make your own firewall appliance. 

Requirement

  1. PC - Nominal configuration with CD DRIVE. (NO hard drive req. but need at least 2 NIC cards) (With Boot from USB Option)
  2. USB Pen Drive (2 GB)
  3. Empty CD – 1 No.
  4. Any system with internet connectivity and CD writer 

Now your factory is ready to create your own Firewall appliance. 

Download Location

http://pfsense.basis06.com/download/downloads/pfSense-1.2.2-LiveCD-Installer.iso 

  1. Download the CD image from the above location
  2. Write the image in a fresh CD. (It is self Bootable Live CD)
  3. Insert this CD in to the Hard disk less PC (Make sure to connect the USB Pen Drive)
  4. Now Boot from CD
  5. IT will ask you to Y/N to VLAN give N. (IF u want to reconfigure u can do it later)
  6. Then it will ask you to enter the name of your Both NIC cards Or by pressing ‘a’ it will detect automatically. (one NIC for LAN other for WAN)
  7. Make sure that both NIC should be connected to your Network at the time of Installation.
  8. After few movements u can see the Control Panel of PFsense.
  9. From the menu select “Install PFsense to Memory stick….” By pressing ‘99’
  1. Follow the onscreen instruction pls select “Accept Default” for all except partition Size.
  2. Enter * for ( /) . Enter 512M for Swap partition. Then press Accept to proceed for installation. Wait for a while.
  3. Yes! You have done it. Your appliance firmware is ready in pen drive.
  4. Now remove CD Drive from the Pc. Select Boot from Pen Drive option.
  5. Change your system IP to 192.168.1.2 in any system and open a browser type http://192.168.1.1
  6. Default User name is : Admin Password is : pfsense.
  7. Then follow the onscreen instruction for furtherer configuration and Enjoy. J
